Hello,

Could it be possible to get the source code for the BtStream_v0.1.0_shimmer3
application? For the Shimmer2r there is a folder called BtStream at
https://github.com/ShimmerResearch/tinyos-shimmer. Nevertheless, the folder
https://github.com/ShimmerResearch/shimmer3 is almost empty.

Thanks a lot,

Paloma.

Hi Paloma,

This has been on my TODO list for a while, but I just haven't had a chance
to clean up the code and get it online.

I aim to have BtStream for shimmer3 online by the end of next week, and
SdLog a week or two after.

Mike

Hi
Have you guys at Shimmer (or anyone else on this list for that matter!) implemented the MPU DSP in any example Shimmer3 applications? I assume we should be able to output quaternions, linear acceleration estimates etc. Are there any coding or hardware caveats we should be aware of? e.g. any conflicts with SD card logging, BT streaming etc We're trying to figure out whether it's worth upgrading from Shimmer2r.
thanks

Hi Chris,

We have implemented the 6DoF Quaternion output on the MPU, but have not
evaluated the results yet. Due to other engineering obligations, our work
and test on the MPU's Digital Motion Processor (DMP) is on hold. Should we
have any new updates concerning this we will be sure to let you know. If you
would like to have a look yourself, there is a 9DoF firmware solution on
Invensense which also employs an MSP430 (sorry no link as you will have to
log in to gain access to their example), or an open source solution here
<https://github.com/joshsh/laboratory/blob/master/mods/i2cdevlib/MPU9150/MPU
9150_9Axis_MotionApps41.h> .

In terms of advantages, the processor on the Shimmer3 is roughly three times
faster, so that is a big bonus, should you need to do extra processing
outside of the DMP. In terms of caveats, I cant think of any, but anyone
feel free to chip in.

Best regards,

Jong Chern

Hi Chris,
For kinematic sensing there are quite a few advantages in terms of Shimmer3
vs. Shimmer2R:
- Extremely low noise analog accelerometer.
- High G ranges (up to 16G) and digital filtering on digital accels (MPU or
ST micro) up to 16G
- All MEMs devices on same PCB (mechanically stable)

Then there are overall improvements-- I think they are well captured on the
product pages. Beyond the CPU speed increase and device size reduction,
many issues raised on this listserv over the years have been addressed--
hardware on/off switch, SDmux works better, JTAG support, more analog
channels (internal and external), precision clock source, better
strap/attachment.
